Allegany County leads the region in both healthcare and the education of new professionals. The county is home to modern and comprehensive health care options, with two major research university health systems; University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and West Virginia University Medicine; represented. Our local nursing programs are nationally recognized and provide a pipeline of local talent to meet local care needs.
A State and Local Partnership
The state of Maryland partially funds local departments of health in every of its counties, including Allegany. From administering food inspections to assistance with health insurance, The Allegany County Health Department provides a number of vital services to residents.
The region's largest health network
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Western Maryland offers a range of both in-patient and out-patient services, including primary care and advanced cardiac care.
With a state-of-the-art hospital and connection to other UPMC medical centers in Pennsylvania and New York, UPMC Western Maryland offers primary, urgent and long term care for residents and visitors alike. In addition, UPMC Western is also Allegany County's largest single employer, underscoring its committee to and continual investment in the community.
While not as prevalent as UPMC, the West Virginia University Health System has some providers in Allegany County and operated the nearby Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, West Virginia. And, with Morgantown only an hour west of Allegany County, local residents are only a short drive from world-class specialty care.
