Allegany County Economic and Community Development (ACECD) is continuing to invest in the future of Barton Business Park, preparing additional industrial acreage for new development and long-term job growth.

Located in Cumberland near key transit routes and major regional employers, Barton Business Park is one of Allegany County’s most strategically positioned industrial sites. The park is approximately six miles south of Interstate 68, with access to U.S. Route 220 and close to the West Virginia border. The site is also situated near established industrial anchors, including Northrop Grumman and IBM.

The park is currently home to American Woodmark, one of Allegany County’s largest employers and one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of kitchen and bath cabinetry. More recently, Geocycle began operating in the County-owned spec building at the site, converting unusable industrial waste products into viable fuels using co-processing technologies.

Allegany County is now advancing the next phase of development, focused on approximately 45 acres within the park. The County is preparing multiple parcels for future industrial use, with completion anticipated later in 2026. By completing key site work in advance, Allegany County is reducing development timelines and minimizing uncertainty for prospective companies.

“In today’s competitive site selection environment, speed matters,” said Jeff Barclay, Director of Allegany County Economic and Community Development. “Companies are looking for locations where they can move efficiently from planning to construction, and shovel-ready sites provide a clear advantage. This work helps ensure Barton Business Park is ready when those opportunities arise.”

In collaboration with the Maryland Department of Commerce and MEDCO, ACECD helped facilitate the financing and infrastructure needed to establish the park, including land acquisition, utilities, road access, and site preparation. Support for this next phase of development was strengthened through funding from the Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Fund (RMPIF), which is helping Allegany County move forward with site work at Barton Business Park and other strategic industrial locations.

That readiness is especially valuable in Western Maryland, where industrial development can be more complex due to mountainous terrain and the high costs associated with preparing usable sites. Barton Business Park stands out because of its relatively flat topography, existing utility infrastructure, and flexible parcel sizes that can accommodate a variety of industrial users and future expansion.

These characteristics make the park well-suited to a range of industries, including advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defense, and circular-economy businesses. With infrastructure in place and site work moving forward, the park offers a combination of readiness, access, and scale that is increasingly important for modern industrial development.

As site work advances, Barton Business Park will become an even stronger part of Allegany County’s industrial portfolio, one that reflects the County’s proactive approach to site readiness, investment, and long-term opportunity.
